The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge spans San Francisco Bay in California, United States, and is the northernmost of all the bridges crossing this American bay.
This bridge has a about 8,851 meters long, approximately, and the most commonly used material in its construction was steel. To save money, the two main cantilevered sections are exactly the same, including the angles, which causes the central section to slope downward and leads many to compare the bridge's design to that of a roller coaster.
Construction of the bridge was completed in September 1956, replacing the ferry service that had been necessary to cross San Francisco Bay. At the time of its opening, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge was one of the longest bridges in the world.
In 2001, an event took place on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge seismic retrofitting program. The official name of this structure is «John F. McCarthy Memorial Bridge.».
