The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) announced that new tenders will be held to add more than 1,000 kilometers of new power lines, as well as 666 megawatts of installed capacity to the National Electric System, in addition to approximately another 1,000 circuit kilometers to the national transmission and distribution grid.
Enrique Ochoa Reza, director of the CFE, says that the 12 infrastructure projects involve an investment of approximately 3,300 million dollars and consist of three gas pipelines, a natural gas transmission project for Baja California Sur, a combined-cycle power plant in Sinaloa, plus four transmission projects and three distribution projects.
The projects will add 1,015 kilometers to the National Gas Pipeline System, 666 megawatts of installed capacity to the National Electric System, and nearly 1,000 kilometers of lines to the national transmission and distribution grid. Transparencia Mexicana will monitor the bidding processes for the three gas pipelines, the natural gas transportation project, the power plant, and one of the transmission projects.
The other two procurement plans will include a social monitor appointed by the Secretariat of Public Administration (SFP). The bidding processes will adhere to the practices recommended by the OECD and Cofece, according to the recently published study.
These projects are part of the goals to improve electricity service, protect the environment, and reduce the cost of electricity generation; that is why it is necessary to implement infrastructure projects for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as sufficient gas pipelines to transport natural gas.
