Some of their characteristics, as we will see below, will allow us to distinguish one from another and understand their unique features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Esta_es_la_clasificacion_de_las_carreteras_en_Espana\"><\/span>Here is the classification of roads in Spain:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Autovias_y_autopistas\"><\/span>1. Expressways and highways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>difference between a highway and a freeway<\/strong> It lies in the type of access and exclusivity for cars. Regional Highways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>state highways<\/strong> These are the roads owned and managed by Spain's autonomous communities. In other words, they fall under the responsibility of each regional government, unlike state highways (which are under the jurisdiction of the central government) or provincial\/local roads (which may be under the jurisdiction of provincial councils or municipal governments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Autovias_que_sirven_de_circunvalacion\"><\/span>4. Their primary function is to connect different areas within the municipal boundaries, such as neighborhoods, residential developments, rural areas, farm roads, or access roads to municipal facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These roads are typically used for local or neighborhood travel, with lower traffic volumes than provincial or regional roads. Although they are not designed for long distances, they are essential for residents\u2019 daily mobility and the logistical operations of each municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Autovias_o_carreteras_con_itinerario_europeo\"><\/span>7. Highways or roads that are part of the European route network<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>highways or roads on the European route network <\/strong>These are roads that are part of the<strong>the Trans-European Transport Network<\/strong>, also known as <strong>E-road network<\/strong>. This network connects different countries on the continent via highways identified by the letter <strong>\u201cE\u201d<\/strong> followed by a number, such as the <strong>E-5 or E-90<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Spain, many of these routes coincide with national expressways or highways, allowing for the smooth and uninterrupted flow of people and goods between countries.
