class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite progress toward gender equality, the representation of women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) remains low. According to the <strong>National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Spain<\/strong>,<strong> In 2023, only 28% of the professionals in these fields were women,<\/strong> This reflects a gap that has yet to be closed. The lack of visible role models and historical barriers have limited women's access to and visibility in these fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To mark the<strong> International Women's Day<\/strong>, at Structuralia we launched the campaign <strong>#EllaEsSTEM<\/strong>, an initiative that aims to highlight the work and careers of women who are making a difference in the sector. Through<strong> interviews with alumni and faculty members,<\/strong> We want to inspire new generations and highlight the importance of continuing to promote women's leadership in areas critical to technological and scientific development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, we spoke with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lauraperezsalazar\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lauraperezsalazar\/\">Laura P\u00e9rez Salazar<\/a><\/strong>, an engineer with a strong track record in the field of technology and innovation. She holds a diploma in<strong> Industrial Technical Engineering<\/strong> and holds a degree in <strong>Mechanical Engineering<\/strong> from the University of the Basque Country, has a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/academy.structuralia.com\/masters\/master-bim-aplicado-a-la-ingenieria-civil-2\">Master's Degree in BIM Applied to Civil Engineering<\/a><\/strong> by <strong>Structuralia<\/strong>. He currently works as<strong> Researcher at the TECNALIA RESEARCH &amp; INNOVATION Technology Center<\/strong>, where he is part of the Next Construction Division within the Energy, Climate, and Urban Transition Unit. His work focuses on the management, planning, and development of structural rehabilitation projects, applying advanced technologies such as digitization and BIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this interview, Laura shares her perspective on the importance of women's visibility in STEM, the impact of role models in inspiring new generations, and the challenges that still persist in the fight for equality in these fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFPor_que_crees_que_es_importante_dar_mayor_visibilidad_a_las_mujeres_en_areas_STEM\"><\/span><strong>Why do you think it's important to give women greater visibility in STEM fields?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abHistorically, STEM fields have been dominated by men, with very low participation by women in these fields.\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the number of women in STEM fields and jobs has increased in recent years, it remains very low. According to Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE), in 2023 only 28% of people employed in STEM sectors were women. This means that <strong>More than 70% of the jobs in these fields are held by men.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00bbThat is why it is so important to raise the profile of women in these fields, so that the number of women in STEM continues to grow.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo_influyen_los_referentes_en_la_inspiracion_de_nuevas_generaciones_en_STEM\"><\/span><strong>How do role models influence the inspiration of new generations in STEM?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abPresenting male or female role models directly influences children's preferences,<strong> creating a mirror effect<\/strong>. It has been proven that <strong>Children who have role models in STEM fields are 20% more interested in these careers than those who do not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, girls who have female role models in STEM fields are slightly more drawn to those careers or jobs than when their role models are men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As women, we need to see other successful and well-known women from a young age<\/strong> \u00bbin fields such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics, to help us imagine that we, too, can achieve success in those areas. If we don't have those female role models, it reinforces the idea that these fields aren't for us.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFHas_participado_en_alguna_iniciativa_que_impulse_la_presencia_de_mujeres_en_este_sector\"><\/span>Have you participated in any initiatives that promote the presence of women in this sector?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abNo, although I know of some that are taking place in my community, and I have several colleagues who have participated.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue_cambios_has_visto_en_la_representacion_de_mujeres_en_conferencias_medios_y_eventos_STEM\"><\/span>What changes have you noticed in the representation of women at conferences, in the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab<strong>The role of women in these areas is becoming increasingly visible<\/strong> \u00bbIn recent years, there has been a notable increase in the number of conferences, events, and the like of this type, as well as in the presence of women in interviews, panel discussions, and the like related to these fields.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFComo_pueden_las_empresas_y_organizaciones_mejorar_la_visibilidad_del_talento_femenino_en_STEM\"><\/span>How can companies and organizations increase the visibility of women in STEM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abCompanies and organizations can take the following actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased Representation of Women in Leadership and Management Positions<\/strong>, both in companies and in public organizations and institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Organizing workshops and open houses at companies<\/strong>, with the goal of introducing children to their work and highlighting the presence of women in various roles and fields.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Collaboration between Businesses and Educational Institutions<\/strong>...by participating in mentoring programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase in the<strong> promotion of activities carried out by women in STEM fields,<\/strong> \u00bbin the media as well as in movies, books, advertising, etc.\"<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue_papel_juegan_las_redes_sociales_y_la_comunicacion_en_la_difusion_del_trabajo_de_las_mujeres_en_este_ambito\"><\/span>What role do social media and communication play in publicizing women's work in this field?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00ab<strong>Social media is an excellent platform and showcase for raising awareness<\/strong> to any type of content and, therefore, are also effective for promoting women's work in STEM fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00bbWe must harness the potential of these media, which are so widely used today, to raise awareness of and normalize the role of women in these fields.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue_impacto_tiene_el_reconocimiento_del_trabajo_de_las_mujeres_en_la_motivacion_y_crecimiento_dentro_del_sector\"><\/span><strong>What impact does recognizing women's work have on motivation and growth within the sector?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abThe<strong> Recognition of any work or activity is essential<\/strong>to improve workers' self-esteem and motivation, fostering their growth and drive for progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00bbThat is why recognizing women's work is necessary to narrow the gender gap and support their career advancement\u2014and, by extension, the growth of the entire sector.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFCuales_son_los_principales_desafios_que_enfrentamos_para_seguir_avanzando_en_este_sentido\"><\/span>What are the main challenges we face in continuing to make progress in this area?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abIn my opinion,<strong> It is crucial to combat gender inequalities in all areas.<\/strong> \u00bbOnly when equality is achieved in education, opportunities, pay, role models, etc., will we be able to compete on an equal footing between men and women.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%C2%BFQue_acciones_concretas_pueden_impulsar_un_cambio_real_en_la_visibilidad_de_las_mujeres_en_STEM\"><\/span>What specific actions can bring about real change in the visibility of women in STEM?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abSome ideas for specific actions might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inclusive education, <\/strong>that promotes an equitable approach to teaching STEM subjects and encourages girls' participation in hands-on and experimental activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carrying Out Activities <strong>that bring science and technology to girls from an early age,<\/strong> in the form of mentoring programs, workshops, camps, after-school activities, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A larger number of <strong>female role models in STEM fields,<\/strong> who serve as sources of inspiration and role models for girls. These role models should be visible not only in academic or professional settings, but also in the media, books, movies, advertising, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Equal opportunities and equal pay for men and women<\/strong> \u00bbin jobs in these fields, as well as to facilitate a work-life balance so that women\u2019s ability to succeed is not diminished by motherhood or other factors.\"<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of women in STEM is not only a matter of equity, but also a<strong> a key factor in innovation and progress.<\/strong> Highlighting women's talent, creating role models, and fostering opportunities for growth are essential steps toward closing the gender gap in these sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Structuralia, we remain committed to this goal through initiatives such as<strong> #EllaEsSTEM<\/strong>, giving a voice to professionals who inspire and transform the industry.
