The key lies in its composition, particularly in the <strong>aggregates<\/strong> that are used or in the incorporation of air into the mixture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regular concrete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The density of conventional concrete ranges from <strong>2,000 kg\/m\u00b3 and 2,600 kg\/m\u00b3<\/strong>. This density is achieved by using <strong>standard-weight aggregates<\/strong>, such as gravel, sand, and crushed stone, which are the main components that provide volume and mass to the mixture. Unlike the <strong>lightweight concrete<\/strong> (which uses low-density aggregates or air-entrained concrete) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.structuralia.com\/en\/hormigon-alta-densidad\/\">high-density concrete<\/a> (which uses high-density aggregates such as barite or magnetite).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Heavy concrete<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary and most sought-after property of heavy concrete is its high density, which can range from 2,600 kg\/m\u00b3 to over 6,000 kg\/m\u00b3, and can even reach 8,000 kg\/m\u00b3 or 9,000 kg\/m\u00b3 in very specific cases. What type of concrete could be applied quickly and efficiently? The answer is the <strong>shotcrete<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As its name suggests, shotcrete is <strong>shoots at high speed<\/strong> from a nozzle onto a surface. As it is sprayed out, it strikes the surface and compacts in place, creating a dense, strong layer. There are two main methods for spraying concrete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dry method<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The cement and aggregates (sand and fine gravel) are mixed together dry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This dry mixture is transported by compressed air through a hose to the nozzle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the nozzle, pressurized water is added just before the mixture is sprayed out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wet process<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Concrete or mortar that has already been mixed with water (and sometimes with accelerators) is pumped through a hose to the nozzle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressurized air is fed into the nozzle to provide the necessary velocity for spraying, and setting accelerators can be added if the material needs to harden very quickly (for example, to stop a water leak).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to these techniques, there is an innovative solution specifically designed to improve the placement of material in complex elements or those with a high reinforcement density: the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.structuralia.com\/en\/hormigon-autocompactante-como-utilizarlo\/\"><strong>Self-compacting concrete<\/strong><\/a>.
