The Icehotel is built every year in Swedish Lapland, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, and year after year, it becomes the largest ice hotel on the planet. About 100 people are involved in building this hotel.
The hotel has a total area of 5,500 square meters, approximately, using about 3,000 cubic meters of snice (a substance halfway between snow and ice) and some 1,000 metric tons of ice. The hotel has about 65 rooms.
The temperature inside the hotel may range from -5 and -8 degrees Celsius.
The hotel is built from blocks of ice extracted from the Torne River, ensuring that during the thaw, all the ice used returns to the river in liquid form. These blocks are extracted when the frozen river water has reached a depth of two meters and is free of bubbles.
Snow machines are used to freeze the steel structural beams, allowing the steel to be removed after a few days.
Every year, this hotel strives to to gradually reduce its carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
This hotel was first built in 1989, and every winter it has welcomed about 50,000 visitors. The Icehotel is usually open from early December through April.
