What is a lighthouse, and what is it used for?

1. End of the World Lighthouse, in Argentina
The lighthouse at the end of the world is known as the San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse and it is the oldest in all of Argentina, as well as being the first to be built in southern waters in 1884. This building is located on Isla de los Estados, in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands, in southern Argentina, and became known for the book by Jules Verne. It is 70 meters tall and emits two white flashes every 3 seconds.
2. Cabo Mayor Lighthouse, in Spain
Also known as Bellavista Lighthouse is located north of the city of Santander, in Spain, and has become one of the area's main tourist attractions. It consists of a 30-meter-tall conical tower which was built on top of an existing building and began operations in the year 1839, although calls for its construction had been made for many years. It emits two flashes of a white light every 10 seconds.
3. South Stack Lighthouse, in Wales
The South Stack Lighthouse, in 28 meters high, is located in northwestern Wales, in the United Kingdom. This structure stands on a small islet connected to Holy Island by a bridge, and its construction dates back to in the early 19th century to guide sailors traveling the route from Ireland to Holyhead and Liverpool. The lighthouse is located on 60-meter cliff and it continues to serve its purpose to this day.
4. Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, Ireland
The Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, one of the most famous in Europe and the world, is located 6 kilometers off the coast of Ireland. It is the tallest and widest lighthouse in Ireland and Great Britain. It has a total height of 26 meters measured from sea level.
5. Kermorvan Lighthouse, in France
The Kermorvan Lighthouse, located in Brittany, France, was built in the year 1849 and is nearly 21 meters. This lighthouse is connected to the mainland by a granite bridge and broadcasts a flash of white light every 5 seconds.
