The La Higuera Hydroelectric Power Plant is located in the Tinguiririca Valley, south of Chile’s capital, and harnesses the natural flow of the Tinguiririca and Azufre rivers to generate energy using renewable methods, thereby providing clean electricity to some 450,000 households.
This hydroelectric power plant was inaugurated in 2010, with a installed capacity of 155 megawatts and with an average output of 750 gigawatt-hours each year. The project for this power plant was one of the first in Chile to be registered to issue carbon credits (Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol).
During its construction, it had as many as 3,500 workers, approximately, and more than 100,000 cubic meters of concrete. Thanks to the construction of the La Higuera hydroelectric power plant, it is possible to supply electricity to about 450,000 homes.
Thanks to it, Chile has been able to meet its growing energy demand in a clean and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With this power plant, the country is also moving closer to its goal of having renewable energy account for 20 % of its energy mix by 2020.
