One of the main problems with Alaska's roads is the formation of potholes, which make driving on these roads difficult and dangerous. Osama Abaza, a professor of traffic engineering and pavement design at the University of Alaska Anchorage, along with two students, has found a possible solution to this problem.
This solution consists of a concrete slab measuring about 2.5 meters wide and about 6 meters long, approximately, and consists mainly of concrete to which a small amount of rubber, derived from recycled tires, and steel fibers.
Here's how to get a slab able to withstand various temperature changes in Alaska, with its freeze-thaw cycles, and, thanks to the steel fibers, it is possible to prevent cracks that may form in this material from spreading.
In addition, thanks to the use of this concrete slab it could lead to long-term savings, since it would not require as much maintenance as conventional methods, although the cost would initially be higher.
