With a total length of 9.8 kilometers, the Toyo Tunnel will be the longest in Colombia, surpassing the 8.65-kilometer-long La Línea Tunnel. It will also be the third-longest in all of Latin America.
This tunnel, nearly 10 kilometers long, is part of a construction project comprising a total of 39 km of track, including 17 other tunnels and 33 bridges. The Toyo Tunnel will help reduce travel time by a considerable amount among the country's different regions. For example, the trip from Medellín to the Gulf of Urabá will be shortened by more than 6 hours.
The construction of the new tunnel will require an investment of 1.8 trillion pesos, which will be provided by the Medellín Mayor’s Office, the Antioquia Governor’s Office, and the national government, and is estimated to generate approximately 5,700 jobs per year. The construction of the tunnel will have a positive impact on the economic, social, and regional development of the area, and will be the perfect complement to the fourth-generation Mar Uno and Mar Dos rail lines and the Port of Urabá project.
