The Baralt Tunnel is currently under construction in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. It will connect the Boyacá Highway with the Caracas-La Guaira Highway and will be nearly 3 kilometers long, making it the longest tunnel in the entire country.
Currently, the project is 30 % complete, which is equivalent to one kilometer of excavation completed, out of the 2.8 km total, since excavation is proceeding at a rate of about 5 meters per day. It is estimated that the project could become operational in 2017.
The Baralt Tunnel will have three lanes in each direction, each 15 meters wide, and will be approximately 12 meters high. It is estimated that about 35,000 vehicles will pass through the tunnel each day, as its construction will benefit thousands of users.
The investment for this project will be approximately 5.6 billion bolívares, which is equivalent to about 809 million euros, and its construction is providing employment for some 5,600 people, including both direct and indirect jobs. It is part of the project to expand Boyacá Avenue, which connects the capital with the state of Vargas, with a total of 10.3 kilometers of construction, consisting of: the Baralt Tunnel, the Macayapa Interchange, and the Tacagua Viaduct.
