This wind farm is located in the province of Coclé, in the Republic of Panama. It is the first wind farm in the country and the largest in Central America. The project consists of four phases, three of which have already been completed, with an installed capacity of 270 megawatts.
Penonomé covers an area of 19,000 hectares, with a total of 108 wind turbines, each 90 meters tall, and consists of 4 phases: Rosa de los Vientos, Marañón, Portobelo, and Nuevo Chagres.
This wind farm meets the energy demand of between 6 and 7 % of this country's population, or, in other words, it has enough capacity to supply clean electricity to about 100,000 families.
The investment in this wind farm has been approximately 570 million dollars, approximately. Construction began in 2012, and the installation of the 25 turbines belonging to the fourth phase is set to begin this year, representing an investment of about 130 million dollars.
This final phase will increase the park's capacity to 337 megawatts. The entire project is estimated to be completed in 2018, resulting in a a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
