The first undersea power cable in all of Latin America will be located in the Strait of Magellan, Argentina. There are still very few projects of this kind known to exist anywhere in the world.
This innovative project will carry electricity from Tierra del Fuego to the mainland. The power line will be 77 kilometers long, 72 of which will run underwater.
This innovative method of energy transmission achieves a an increase of 600–700 MW in current supply in Argentina’s national interconnected grid. They will also implement a practical solution: the surplus gas that is currently not being utilized from the Vega Pléyade and Carina fields due to capacity constraints will be used to generate electricity for Argentina, which will be transmitted through the new gas pipeline.
However, the Submagallanic project is not the only one in Tierra del Fuego; once it enters the country’s electricity market, there are plans to build a wind farm in that province.
