This bridge connects San Francisco and the city of Oakland in California, United States, passing through Yerba Buena Island via a tunnel, and carries more than 240,000 vehicles per day.

This replaced section was built in accordance with innovative techniques that ensure its resistance to major earthquakes, The other section was seismically retrofitted. The cost of the repair was about 6.3 billion dollars.
