The Confederation Bridge, which connects the province of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island across the Northumberland Strait, in Canada, is nearly 13 kilometers long, making it the world’s longest bridge over frozen waters during the five months when the strait is covered in ice.
Construction of the Confederation Bridge began in 1993, and it was opened in 1997. The total cost of building the bridge was $1,000 million, providing jobs for more than 5,000 people.
The bridge is about 12.9 kilometers and it is one of Canada's greatest engineering achievements. The bridge's height above sea level is 40 meters, although at some points at this point can reach as high as 60 m., thus allowing ships to pass under the bridge.
Throughout the design and construction phases of this project, respect for the environment and protection of the surrounding ecosystem were top priorities, and the project received recognition for its great sensitivity to the natural environment.
