The Chenab Bridge, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, is today considered the the world's tallest railway bridge. Standing 350 meters above the Chenab River, this engineering marvel not only breaks records but also serves as a symbol of progress, connectivity, and modernization in a region historically marked by geographical challenges and political complexity.
Its construction has been classified as a historic milestone, comparable to some of the largest infrastructure projects on the planet. More than just a bridge, the Chenab has become a symbol of innovation and sustainable development in South Asia.
Project History and Planning
The idea of building the Chenab Bridge began to take shape in the 1990s, when the government sought to improve rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. The mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions had left many communities isolated for decades.
In 1999, the project was approved as part of the plan Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which sought to integrate the region into the national rail network. However, initial studies revealed the magnitude of the challenge: the Chenab River flows through a deep valley surrounded by unstable mountains prone to landslides.
The Indian government granted final approval in 2003, but financial and technical obstacles soon arose. There were delays due to the need to redesign the bridge to withstand winds of up to 260 km/h and high-magnitude earthquakes. Structural safety was the top priority.
The project was revived with renewed vigor in 2008, with the participation of the state-owned company Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) and several international engineering firms, marking the start of one of Asia's most ambitious construction projects.

Strategic Location of the Chenab Bridge
The bridge is located in the Reasi district, in the picturesque Chenab River Valley. This area is famous for its rugged terrain, deep gorges, and breathtaking natural scenery. However, these very characteristics made it a monumental challenge for the engineers.
The bridge’s location is no coincidence: Jammu and Kashmir is a strategic region both militarily and economically. The Chenab Bridge will provide fast and safe rail access, strengthening the region’s integration with the rest of India and promoting social and economic stability.
Technical Specifications and Dimensions
Record Height and Comparison with Other Bridges
The Chenab Bridge holds a world record with 359 meters high, surpassing the bridge over the Beipanjiang River in China, which is 275 meters long. In addition, its lThe total length is 1,315 meters, making it one of the most impressive railway structures on the planet.
Materials Used and Structural Strength
More than 25,000 metric tons of steel structural components, designed to withstand extreme conditions. The steel was specially treated to resist corrosion, low temperatures, and wind pressure.
Advanced Engineering and Technologies Used
The structure was built using a method known as cable crane erection, which made it possible to assemble the components at a height of hundreds of meters without the need for conventional scaffolding. In addition, sensors and real-time monitoring technologies were used to ensure safety during each phase.

India Opens a New High-Speed Rail Segment Featuring Rails from Gijón
The massive railway project connecting the Chenab Bridge—considered the highest in the world—to India’s high-speed rail network features a key component with a Spanish touch: rails manufactured in Gijón. These materials, produced to the highest quality standards, have become a strategic element in ensuring the safety and durability of the infrastructure.
Asturian involvement in this project not only reflects the excellence of Spanish engineering in large-scale international projects, but also reinforces Spain’s position as a global leader in the railway supply industry.
