The Indian government is seeking foreign investment to finance the improvement and expansion of the country's major ports and to develop new rail and highway projects that will improve the country's connectivity.
Senior government officials have stated that Indian ports are not facing financial hardship, but that seeking foreign investment could be a good option for securing financing at a lower cost.
The country expects to raise approximately 47.6 trillion dollars (42 trillion euros) in private funds that will be allocated directly to port development. In addition, public investments will be made in infrastructure that can improve port operations, such as expanding rail and road connections.
Foreign investment in India is nothing new. Last year, the World Bank announced an investment of 800 million euros to develop the freight rail corridor currently under construction in India.
