The goal of any company is always to maximize profits, which translates into a constant quest for system improvements, with a clear focus on minimizing losses and maximizing efficiency in all aspects of project management.
To address the issues described above, a new management system based on innovation has been developed, one that enables better and faster adaptation to the highly competitive and constantly changing environments in which we currently find ourselves, known as "Agile Methodologies"
Among these methodologies, we can find the "Lean Manufacturing" which is based on the minimal use of resources, that is, only those strictly necessary for growth, thereby minimizing losses as much as possible.
To successfully eliminate everything that does not add value, Lean Manufacturing is based on principles that help achieve optimal results at the right time and in the right place, always with the highest possible quality. These principles can be summarized as follows:
Adjusting Production to Meet Demand
To ensure that products are manufactured at the same time they are sold, it is necessary to use the following tools and techniques:
- Kanban System: It enables "just-in-time" production, which ensures that the right product is manufactured at the right time and in optimal quantities based on market demand.
- Short-Term Planning and Production Leveling to align manufacturing resources with demand.
- Reduce setup times machinery to reduce production lead times.
- Standardize operations and achieve the necessary cycle times tailored to demand.
- Organizing the Workspace to implement cell manufacturing and achieve standardization of operations.
Ensuring Quality
To ensure optimal quality and that only “good parts” pass inspection, it is necessary to:
- Organization, Order, and Cleanliness (5S): Organization, cleanliness, and order are essential for restoring equipment to a condition in which it can operate at high reliability levels to ensure the efficient execution of processes.
- Autonomous defect control: Ensure quality during manufacturing by installing automatic defect detection systems that prevent defective products from moving through the production line or allow for their immediate correction once detected.
- Functional Department: Quality should be a core value of the organization, not the responsibility of a single department.
Respect for the human dimension
Human resources are vital to achieving our goals, so they must be nurtured and encouraged. To do this, it is necessary to:
- Staff flexibility: Versatility is key to standardizing operations.
- Small-group improvement activities and a suggestion system: Ideal for channeling initiatives from employees, who are the ones most familiar with how processes work and can therefore offer the most valuable suggestions for improvement.
By successfully optimizing all these basic principles, we aim to achieve continuous improvement. It is important to note that Lean Manufacturing is constantly evolving and learning, adapting different techniques to different settings.
