GuBIMclass is a a classification system focused on the Spanish construction sector to group common characteristics among users and customers.
Thanks to the emergence of the BIM methodology The classification process has become an automated procedure that provides access to all relevant information in the field of building construction. This methodology has made it possible to the AEC sector's need to classify and group each of the components (equipment, facilities, and infrastructure) that make up a building. The ability to classify the various aspects of a building is essential during the different phases of construction, which range from design to construction.
What Is an Element Classification System?
A classification system is a way to organize and categorize elements or concepts. It involves various processes that facilitate the grouping of objects based on common properties or characteristics. In BIM environments, a classification system is used to facilitate the organization, identification, and location of model content.
What are the benefits of a classification system?
- Set up a model using a database shared with other users and customers.
- It makes it easier for users and customers to have a common name for the elements.
- Set different requirements for the model elements.
- Have all the information and complete control over the content of the models.
- It allows you to manage and view objects in detail, from a broad overview down to the finest details.

What is guBIMclass and where did it come from?
The guBIMclass system was developed by the user group BIM of Catalonia. After studying the various systems, the goal in creating it was to provide the construction industry in Spain with a classification system based on BIM methodology and tailored to your needs.
The practical aspect of the project's guBIMCat is that classify the elements according to their function. This allows these elements to be grouped according to local usage patterns so that users in Spain can recognize them.
Currently, it only includes building elements from architectural projects. The development team’s next goals are to expand its use to the fields of civil engineering and linear infrastructure.
guBIMclass Structure
The system is structured as follows: a hierarchy divided into four levels. Some of the basic levels are:
- 00 Previous Work
- 10 Site Preparation for Construction
- 20 Structural System
- 30 Exterior Finishing Systems
- 40 Interior Finishing Systems
- 50 Facilities, Equipment, and Services
- 60 Equipment and Furniture
- 70 Landscaping in Outdoor Spaces
- 80 Temporary Facilities
Similarities and Differences with Revit
Currently, Revit is the most widely used modeling software among professionals. The hierarchical system It is organized in the following order: types, families, categories, and disciplines. This system is fixed and cannot be changed. In other words, the order and names of the elements in this system are predefined and cannot be edited or renamed. This is one of the biggest differences from Revit. Another difference lies in the categories. In that regard, guBIMclass offers a wider range of categories and descriptions compared to those offered by Revit.

How to Get the Most Out of guBIMclass
With guBIMclass, you can set requirements for each element, as well as have a greater control and understanding of established models. Its software facilitates follow-up reviews and monitoring of the models based on a known structure. In addition, it makes it possible to transfer information by facilitating mapping using classification systems such as Uniformat, Revit, or Masterformat.
In Structuralia There are various master's programs focused on BIM as applied to different disciplines, which allow industry professionals to delve deeper into this exciting field. Among others, the Master's Degree in BIM Applied to Building Construction Using Software Such as guBIMclass, a classification system tailored to the Spanish construction industry.
