Implementation of Agile Methodologies in HR Departments

The Human Resources professionals can help your company and its professionals to achieve its goals and to be constantly prepared for the market.

Agile companies are defined as those that move nimbly in the business world; in other words, they act promptly when opportunities arise in the industry to take advantage of them and solve problems. This was one of the most important insights shared by the expert in leadership and team building Miguel Ángel Vera in the webinar “Agile Methodologies in Human Resources” organized by PHAROS. During his presentation, the expert outlined the Agile approach—designed specifically for human resources departments (also known as talent or people departments in some companies)—in five main sections, which we list and break down below:

Fundamentals of the Agile Methodology Approach

During the event, it was emphasized that beyond Agile Methodologies (since there are different formats or specialties) we refer to agile approach and how each company puts it into practice and maximizes it in its day-to-day operations—as a set of specific actions to achieve the company’s objectives—in examples such as: How do you create a plan? How do you make an estimate? How do you build a team? How do you identify employees’ weaknesses to develop a training plan?

The presentation continued with a discussion of the process of the digital transformation and its role in streamlining business operations. First, a process takes place to identify problems or needs to be addressed within the company in order to implement a transformation process that builds a team with the knowledge, aptitudes, and skills required for any task. From there, the digital component comes into play, with digital and technological tools, software, and computer applications (Big data, programming, Python, BIM, etc.) that will equip professionals with the skills needed to meet the organization's objectives and the industry's needs.

For organizations, it is extremely valuable to have professionals who, based on a set of skills, can foster a positive work ethic and commitment to carrying out their duties. In the face of technical and knowledge-based changes in the market or industry, “agile” also means that the company’s professionals are eager to stay up to date so they are prepared for any challenges that may arise, and that the company can help its team stay prepared.

A goal-oriented approach is also part of implementing the Agile methodology to minimize the margin of error or non-compliance in relevant business activities. During the webinar, various ways to work toward this were discussed, and you can learn more by watching the recording.

Why Use Agile in the Context of Human Resources?

  • Agile is not just a fad; in a global and ever-changing environment, it will be necessary to closely monitor market trends and have professionals who possess the skills the market demands.

  • Professionals joining companies need to be agile. Regardless of their level of experience in any field, it is highly valuable for them to think with a agile approach.

  • Recruitment professionals need to understand the approach.
  • The Human Resources department needs to be agile in the face of potential changes and uncertainty.

  • It is recommended to set tangible goals for the short term.

Agile: A Natural Response to Digital Transformation

Once data-driven insights have been identified regarding how a work team is performing, how employees are being trained, the company’s current reality and needs, and indicators of effectiveness and efficiency, that is when the digital component becomes essential. At that point, it becomes necessary to identify which specific technologies, software, applications, training providers, and other resources can help the company with its transformation process.

    • What does transformation entail?

It involves analyzing and interpreting data to draw conclusions that are critical for decision-making strategic decisions. A clear example can be found in training platforms for professionals, such as PHAROS: the most in-demand subject areas, the types of resources most frequently accessed (documentation, multimedia, etc.), and the percentage of time spent on the platform, among other metrics. This allows the company to identify problems that need to be addressed and to be more adaptable in the face of constant changes in its industry.

Companies will have the opportunity to apply, for example, the agile approach—which is the subject of this post—through the courses on this methodology that are available to their professionals. Continuing education is guaranteed with more than 900 specialized courses, in 30 different training areas.
