The world's tallest Ferris wheels

What began as a hydraulic machine has now become a true attraction in the world's most iconic cities, transforming into observation decks that allow us to enjoy breathtaking views from above.

Ferris wheels originated in the Middle East as a method of collecting water, and were used for that purpose for many years. They consisted of a wheel attached at its center to a horizontal axle that allowed it to rotate, with spokes ending in buckets—the elements used to collect the water. But in the late 19th century, American engineer George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., designed and built the first Ferris wheel as the star attraction of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Since then, there have been many advances that have allowed these unique recreational structures to grow in size. What used to be buckets are now cabins where people can enjoy the spectacular views offered by the Ferris wheel. Below is a brief overview of the world’s tallest Ferris wheels.

Dubai Eye
The world's tallest Ferris wheel, standing 210 meters tall, is currently under construction in Dubai. Its design is based on the London Eye, and it is expected to be completed sometime in 2015. Despite the significant investment required for its construction, it is expected to generate substantial revenue by attracting a large number of tourists each year. The company in charge of its construction is Starneth. This company is also responsible for the New York Wheel and, previously, the London Eye.

New York Wheel
It will be located on Staten Island and is expected to be completed in 2017. Standing 190 meters tall, it will be the second-tallest Ferris wheel in the world. Its estimated cost is $230 million, and it is expected to generate $4 to $5 million in revenue annually. From this Ferris wheel, visitors will be able to enjoy incredible views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other landmarks.

 

The High Roller
It is located in Las Vegas and is approximately 168 meters tall. A total of $175 million has been invested in the infrastructure, which consists of 28 cabins, each with a capacity of 40 people. Each ride lasts approximately 30 minutes.

 

Singapore Flyer
It opened in 2008, standing 165 meters tall and 150 meters in diameter. It has 28 cabins, each with a capacity of 28 people. Not only does it allow us to see the city’s landmarks, but when weather conditions are favorable, we can even see Malaysia or Indonesia.

Star of Nanchang
It is 160 meters tall. Its construction cost approximately 57 million yuan, equivalent to 5.53 million euros.

The London Eye
It is possibly the most famous Ferris wheel in the world. Since 2000, it has been open to visitors on the banks of the River Thames in London; it stands 135 meters tall.

The Vienna Ferris Wheel
It isn’t one of the tallest Ferris wheels in the world—it’s only 61 meters tall—but it is one of the most visited and famous structures on the planet. It was one of the first Ferris wheels built in 1897 and is also known as the Wiener Riesenrad, which means “Vienna Ferris Wheel” in German. It was built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Franz Joseph of Austria.
