The Garabit Railway Viaduct is located near Ruynes-en-Margeride, over the Truyère River, in the town of Saint-Flour, France. When it opened in 1884, it ranked among the tallest and longest viaducts in the world.
The metal panel of the structure has a about 565 meters long, approximately, divided into 7 bays. The The arch has a span of about 165 meters. This metal structure has a about 124 meters high.
Once construction of the arch of this viaduct was completed, work began on the deck. The deck was built in two halves, one on each side of the bridge; each half was moved into its final position by pushing it until the two halves were joined together.
Construction of this 3,300-metric-ton viaduct began in 1881 and was completed three years later, in April 1884. At the time of its opening, the structure became the longest arch bridge in the world and also ranked among the tallest bridges worldwide.
Alexandre Gustave Eiffel's company was involved in the construction of this viaduct.
